Vital Signs: The Jerusalem Council

Here are the worship songs selected by our worship team for this week:

Scripture: Acts 15:1-21

Sermon and Announcements:

Sermon Discussion Questions:
1. Acts 15 opens with a dispute in the church about Gentiles needing to include Jewish customs and practices into their faith.
When have you seen a dispute among Christians and how was it settled?

2. St. Augustine wrote, “in essentials, unity; in non-essentials, charity; in all things, charity.”
What are some things you would deem in the Christian faith and praxis as “essential”, or “non-essential”? Why?

3. The idea of grace is so foreign to us that we often try to unnecessarily take on a yoke of “works” to supplement grace and mitigate the sufficiency of Jesus.
What are some yokes that you personally have taken on at times that might actually work counter to the grace of the gospel?

4. At the end of the council, James determines it unnecessary for the Gentile believers to practice circumcision or follow the Mosaic law, but directs the Gentiles in their individual freedom to observe four commands for the sake of unity in the church community, and loving each other well.
What are ways you can use your freedom in Christ to benefit only yourself?
What are ways you can use your freedom in Christ for the benefit for the overall health of your church community?
