Three months since baptism where I have made public that I “…have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator” (Colossians 3:9-10), and the report is in, “So far so good.” Compared to the roller coaster ride of emotions and uncertainty I felt a year ago, the change seems so rapid and gratifying. Jesus doesn’t waste any time.

I make better daily life decisions for myself with the guidance of God in the Words of the Bible. Sometimes, however, I feel obligated to read the Bible, and I put it aside for days. Sometimes it reaches out to me through devotional aids such as Our Daily Bread. Sometimes I force myself to read or listen to a chapter of old testament and nothing is picked up. Sometimes I listen to Exodus in full theatrical audio with music, sound effects and voice acting, and I can feel what the relationship with God was like as an Israelite back in ancient times.

I am glad that the Bible is so vast and intricate. One reason is there is always something new to discover. Truths are validated, counsel is granted and encouragement is given. Another reason is it creates a lot of interpretations from various scholars, ministers and researchers. It tickles my mind to exercise reasoning and faith as they expound their views to discern for myself what is truth. Finally, the third reason is I can understand God better. The Bible is my source to know God, and what is His Will when I pray, “Thy Will be done.” Being renewed in His knowledge is knowing and understanding the truth in the Bible.

I am finding, however, being shaped by God is trial by fire. At times, I get it wrong and consequences ensue. I have to redo, but he’s always there to help, and He never gives up on me. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, in whatever crucible you find yourself, “Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:4). I usually do not make any New Year’s resolution because it is so cliché and I often do not fulfill them. This year, I made some, and I am confident that God will see me through the ones that conform to His image, which is what really matters anyway. Happy New Year everyone.
